Arturo Fuente
In 1887, Arturo Fuente was born not far from Havana. By 1910, his travels had brought him to Tampa, Florida, where he had established and was starting a family with Doa Hilda Fuente. He founded the business that bears his name in 1912 and used tobacco from his own country to hand-roll cigars at a factory in Tampa. After only two short years, tragedy struck: a fire destroyed the plant, halting output. In order to keep his company’s presence in the market, Arturo refused to give up on his ambition and continued rolling cigars in his kitchen and selling them across the neighborhood.

When the family released the Flor de Orlando, their first handmade cigar made with non-Cuban tobacco, in 1966, the reputation Carlos had established was priceless. Due to the high level of customer confidence in the brand, Fuente, sales were robust. Beginning in the early 1970s, Carlos experimented with cultivating tobacco in Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. The establishment of factories in Honduras and Nicaragua at the start of the decade resulted in their closure by the end due to those countries’ respective revolutions and a “accidental” fire in Honduras.

The charity auction that generally takes place at the Habanos Festival in February is one of the largest occasions in the calendar for Cuban cigars each year. Havana: A Personal Perspective
There is a lot to say about Havana, from its turbulent political history and status as a shelter for the US Mafia to the juxtaposition of food shortages and its status as the premier source and destination for premium rum and good cigars. Don’t get me wrong, though. The city is stuck in time since it abandoned its plan to keep outsiders out in the belief that everything else will work out on its own. Despite this, the city is nonetheless smart. Despite all the commotion, Wiki deep-diving, film and television depictions, and propaganda-laced news reports, I thought Havana was quite possibly one of the world’s most endearing cities.
